Our verdictGumroad is the fastest way to go from zero to selling a digital product. No monthly fee, no technical setup, no payment processor to configure separately — just upload a file, set a price, and share the link. The tradeoff is a 10% cut on every sale. That is excellent at $500/mo in sales. It is expensive at $5,000/mo. We launched our Break Free OS on Gumroad, validated the product with 40 sales, then moved to a lower-fee checkout. That is the right sequence.

What Gumroad actually is

Gumroad is a platform for selling digital products — eBooks, templates, Notion workspaces, courses, software, music, photography — directly to customers. Upload a file, set a price, and Gumroad provides a checkout page. They handle payments (via Stripe and PayPal), file delivery, receipts, and refunds. You receive payouts weekly or monthly.

There is no monthly subscription. Gumroad charges 10% of every sale. For a first-time digital product creator, this is the ideal model — you pay nothing until you earn something.

Who it is and is not for

Key features

Instant product setup

Upload a file or paste a URL, write a description, set a price, hit publish. The whole process takes 12 minutes for a simple eBook. The checkout page is clean and high-converting — Gumroad has optimised it across billions in transactions. You do not need to design anything.

Built-in marketplace discovery

Gumroad has a marketplace where buyers browse by category. When you publish, your product is listed there. It is not a massive traffic source, but it is real — we received 8 organic sales in our first month from Gumroad discovery without promoting the product. Treat it as a bonus, not a strategy.

Affiliate management for your products

Set up an affiliate programme for your own products — invite affiliates, set commission rates, track referrals, and Gumroad pays them automatically. Note: this is for promoting your products through affiliates, not for earning commissions by promoting Gumroad to other sellers.

Basic email list

Every buyer is automatically added to your Gumroad follower list. You can send product update emails to this list. No sequences, no automations — basic broadcast only. Export the buyer list to Kit or GetResponse for proper email marketing.

Our launch experience

We launched the Break Free OS Notion template on Gumroad at $19. Setup: 20 minutes. First sale: 3 days after posting on TikTok with the checkout link in bio. We ran on Gumroad for 2 months — 67 sales, $1,273 gross, $1,146 after Gumroad's 10% cut ($127 in fees). At that point we moved the checkout to reduce the per-sale fee. Net saving after switching: approximately $70-80 per month at our volume.

Honest opinion

The 10% fee is a fair trade for zero setup cost and instant sales capability. The mistake most creators make is staying on Gumroad past the point where the maths supports it. If you are making $3,000/month in digital product sales, you are paying $300/month to Gumroad. Systeme.io costs $17/mo with 0% transaction fees. The migration takes a weekend. Do the maths early and move when the numbers tell you to.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Gumroad actually take per sale?
Gumroad takes 10% of the sale price. On a $27 product, you receive $24.30. On a $97 product, you receive $87.30. Stripe or PayPal fees are on top — typically 2.9% + $0.30. At $1,000/month in sales, Gumroad takes $100. At $5,000/month, $500.
Can I migrate from Gumroad to another platform?
Yes. Export your buyer list as a CSV and rebuild your product pages on the new platform. Takes 1-2 days depending on product count. You lose your Gumroad profile URL and marketplace listing, but your audience follows you if you communicate the move clearly.
Does Gumroad bring me customers organically?
Somewhat. The marketplace generates passive traffic for well-tagged products in popular categories like productivity, design, and writing. Do not build your business strategy around it — treat it as a bonus. Your primary traffic comes from your own social media, email list, and SEO.
Is Gumroad safe and trusted by buyers?
Yes. Over $1 billion in transactions processed. Buyers recognise the checkout as legitimate and the refund process is straightforward. For digital products with clear value propositions, conversion rates on Gumroad checkout pages are competitive.
